Notes and Discussion Vole Population Dynamics: Influence of Weather Extremes on Stoppage of Population Growth
ثبت نشده
چکیده
—Effects of 74 episodes of extreme weather on stoppage of population growth and resulting amplitudes of annual population fluctuation of 39 fluctuations of Microtus ochrogaster and 20 fluctuations of M. pennsylvanicus were studied over a 25 y period in eastcentral Illinois. Episodes of extreme weather may have stopped population growth of only six M. ochrogaster fluctuations and of two M. pennsylvanicus fluctuations. Cessation of growth of only one population fluctuation (M. pennsylvanicus) could be attributable solely to an episode of extreme weather. Episodes of extreme weather occurred during 62% of the increase phases of M. ochrogaster population fluctuations and 75% of those of M. pennsylvanicus, with no associated cessation of population growth. We conclude that episodes of extreme weather were not a primary factor responsible for cessation of population growth or variation in amplitudes of population fluctuations of either M. ochrogaster or M. pennsylvanicus.

Human population growth as proximate cause of wetland dynamics
The study examined the influence of population as proximate cause of wetland dynamics in the lower Ogun river basin of southwestern, Nigeria. Both primary and secondary data were used for the study. The primary data included 100 questionnaires administered and distributed among the fadama users group representing 10% of the estimated population of the group. Satellite images of years 1972, 1984...
متن کاملAre silica defences in grasses driving vole population cycles?
Understanding the factors that drive species population dynamics is fundamental to biology. Cyclic populations of microtine rodents have been the most intensively studied to date, yet there remains great uncertainty over the mechanisms determining the dynamics of most of these populations. For one such population, we present preliminary evidence for a novel mechanism by which herbivore-induced ...
متن کاملInteractive effects of prey and p,p'-DDE on burrowing owl population dynamics.
We used population models to explore the effects of the organochlorine contaminant p,p'-DDE and fluctuations in vole availability on the population dynamics of Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia). Previous work indicated an interaction between low biomass of voles in the diet and moderate levels of p,p'-DDE in Burrowing Owl eggs that led to reproductive impairment. We constructed periodic and s...
متن کاملStrong “bottom‐up” influences on small mammal populations: State‐space model analyses from long‐term studies
"Bottom-up" influences, that is, masting, plus population density and climate, commonly influence woodland rodent demography. However, "top-down" influences (predation) also intervene. Here, we assess the impacts of masting, climate, and density on rodent populations placed in the context of what is known about "top-down" influences. To explain between-year variations in bank vole Myodes glareo...
متن کاملDeterminants of lemming outbreaks.
Population outbreaks in tundra rodents have intrigued scientists for a century as a result of their spectacular appearances and their general lessons in ecology. One outstanding question that has led to competing hypotheses is why sympatric lemmings and voles differ in regularity and shape of their outbreaks. Lemming outbreaks may be lost for decades while vole populations maintain regular popu...
